Folkert de Jong
Born in 1972
Lives and works in Amsterdam, Netherlands.
Based in Amsterdam, de Jong is best known for his evocative sculptural installations and tableaux that combine figurative elements with provocative mise-en-scènes. His vignettes borrow from theatrical principles to stage eerie narrative fragments, often bordering on the tragicomic and grotesque. By working with industrial materials such as styrofoam and polyurethane, as well as with more traditional sculptural media like bronze, de Jong deliberately combines high and low cultural references and materials in quasi-allegorical mashups. His work often invokes the art historical alongside contemporary political issues and topical interests, delivered with a feeling of post-apocalyp- tic futurity.
